Mul’s Diner: Diner Heaven in Southie

Mul’s Diner: Diner Heaven in Southie

Mul’s Diner, just off the Broadway T stop (Red Line) in South Boston (Southie) is your basic chrome classic American city diner. With friendly waitresses, good food, hot coffee, and reasonable prices, this is an excellent choice for a quick, filling, dependable, breakfast.

I stepped inside early on a weekday and immediately found a seat amongst the moderate workday morning trade. A table of transit cops (always a good sign) was just finishing up as I arrived. The waitress deftly handed out their bill and took my coffee order in the single fluid, hyper-efficient, multi-tasking breeze through the dining room that is common to good wait staff the world over (particularly diner waitresses). On her next spin through her station, the coffee was delivered, steaming and aromatic in a pleasant, heavy-in-the-hand white diner mug. Yeah, you know the one.

With 2-tops, 4-seat rounds, red/black vinyl booths, and 8-10 counter seats, Mul’s can accommodate just about any size group.

As I sat there on a pleasant spring morning, basking in the glow of a good diner, I watched a procession of suits, hard hats, and city and transit cops start their day. In the following days, passing by on the street, I noticed the same steady and consistent clientele regardless of the time or day of the week.

My Working Man’s Breakfast (3 eggs, home fries, choice of bacon/ham/sausage (I chose bacon), toast and coffee was $4.95. The coffee was a touch bitter, but nothing I couldn’t counteract with just a drop of milk, and refills were plentiful and freely given.

The dark rye toast and bacon were cooked to order, and the stuff of dreams. The home fries arrived crispy and hot, without too much grease (but enough to keep things interesting), while the egg whites were a bit soft for sunny side up, but passable.  I went bog standard, but if you want things gussied up a bit, Mul’s is known for their Crème brûlée French toast.

Overall, Mul’s Diner in Southie (south Boston) offers everything you want in a diner breakfast: fast friendly service, and hardy, dependable good food at reasonable prices.

Cop Cachet: Very high – When I ate there, there was both a table of transit cops between shifts, and a unit of BPD special projects officers fueling up in preparation for their day working the Red Sox home opener at Fenway.
