An American Diner in Paris: LouLou’ Friendly Diner

An American Diner in Paris: LouLou’ Friendly Diner

After a week of croissants, gussied up coffee, and lite bites taken in sidewalk cafes, I was ready for something a bit more substantial.  Which is why finding an American-style diner in the heart of Paris was such a revelation.  And, while not exactly an “authentic” city diner experience, LouLou’ Friendly Diner does scratch the itch for something heavier than crepes, good coffee that’s not too fancy, and friendly service.

In Paris, as much as I liked the coffee and pastries, by day seven I was beginning to fade under the onslaught of crumbly delicate, sweets.  I know, first world problems…. Nevertheless, there I was, hungry and single-minded in my wants. Finding eggs was no problem, but I really wanted sausage and pancakes, and an endless cup of coffee that I could sip while reading a good book on a quiet Saturday morning.

A week before my trip I’d read a brief blurb somewhere about an American diner in Paris. And, lo and behold, LouLou’ Friendly Diner sat just a few blocks from my rental flat, and was pretty much just what I wanted.

Now, LouLou’ proved to be no, “What’ll you have, hon” trucker’s diner.  But the pancakes were high, light, big, and cooked all the way through.  The sausage came in links (not patties) and was good, but on the mild side, and the coffee was excellent, though not quite the bottomless cup of American diner fame. The eggs were a bit too creamy for my liking, and the appearance of rocket (arugula) on the plate was definitely a departure from standard diner fare, but it gave things a nice fresh feel and helped me feel less guilty about my giant American diner breakfast cravings.

LouLou’s atmosphere was a bit more fancied up (Parisian) than any proper Jersey or Boston diner, but the service is spot on. Attentive, but not fawning, the staff clearly knew the diner appeal for Americans, and are conversant in diner culture.  I believe the owner is either American, or has spent a lot of times there, and has coached his staff appropriately.

Regardless, it’s clear that LouLou’ Friendly Diner caters to an American palette, but is definitely a Paris dining experience (American fare with Paris style).

And, conveniently located near the Musée de Cluny (Cluny Museum) on Boulevard Saint-Germain it’s centrally located, easy to find, and convenient as a stop on the way to other things.

Cop Cachet: Mostly tourists, but a few locals, and the staff were all French (no American kids waiting tables for the summer, etc.).

Mug Meter:  Good coffee in a heavy white china cup (not a “mug”) on a saucer.
